Fourth Week

"The sun rises, and the sun goes down, and hastens to the place where it rises. ..." Ec. 1:5

Time goes by very quickly! We have completed our fourth week here! Last Thursday  during the Bible study at their house, Eduardo stated that he was not sure of his salvation; therefore, Luis asked him if he wanted to say the prayer and he did. Then Arelis also said the prayer. We just praise the Lord about these two lives! They are attending church at Arelis home town because they like the music there. We are fine with that, as long as they are faithful attending a good church.

Saturday night was the couples' meeting. This time we separated the men and the women and had deep conversations about each other's needs. Both men and women opened up a lot. We are going to do the same thing again this Saturday. Luis preached in both churches on Sunday. Then we went to Francisco's house for lunch, along with Pastor Alejandro and his wife. Luz is such a great cook! Lunch was delicious. We were also invited to a birthday party for Alejandra's niece who turned two years old. It was pouring in the afternoon, and we almost did not go, but it had stopped raining by the time we got to the party. We had no problem getting back home in the dark.

Luis and Elizabeth had never been to this country. Since their country is land-locked, they have been enjoying the beach very much; however, we decided that they needed to see some different part of the country, so we took them to a three day trip to see a volcano and enjoy thermal water pools. It was a very nice break for all four of us. We had a tour of bubbling mud pots and also of a geophysical energy plant which provides 17% of the electric energy for the country. It is a great example of renewable energy. We are back in town now. Tonight we will go back to Eduardo and Arelis' house for Bible study.

Prayer requests:

  • Please keep praying for good health and protection from mosquito-transmitted diseases.
  • Pray for Walter and Yesenia, that she will get back from Nicaragua with their daughters soon.
  • Pray for all the people with whom we have shared, that the Lord will bring a great harvest in this little town.
  • Pray for protection for our family back home.

Thank you for your prayers!

Third Week - Mothers´Day

Ever since our friends Luis and Elizabeth arrived we have been going non-stop. Bolivia is a land-locked country, so they are delighted to have the beach available just a short walk from our place. Besides going to the beach and to the pool, we also have been busy ministering. Thursday night was the Bible study at Eduardo's house. The topic was Jesus, the Lamb of God. Luis is an excellent teacher. They kept saying, "Now I get it." It was a very good night.

We were going to go visit Randall and Arleth on Friday evening, but Arleth got dengue fever. Another friend down with either zika or dengue! Actually they can´t tell for sure until the blood tests come back. Please pray for our protection against mosquito transmitted diseases. Saturday night was the couples' Bible study. We took some coils that help keep the mosquitoes away. We are going to do that every Saturday from now on. At the Bible study, John explained what a testimony is using Acts 26, and then Luis and Elizabeth shared their their testimonies. They have lived amazing lives.

Sunday mornings we have to go to two different groups: a small group in our little town and then to the "big church." Luis preached in both places. We had a sweet time of worship in the first group. There is a young man who 15 years old and who is learning to play the guitar pretty much by himself. He led us in worship. I am so amazed to see his progress and how the Lord is using him in this very small group of believers. We had lunch on Sunday at Francisco's house, along with the pastor and his wife.

Luis went fishing with Francisco and a few of the locals on Sunday afternoon. He loves to fish, but had never fished in the ocean before. He was thrilled to catch a good size red snapper. I had told him  not to bring any (stinky) fish into our house, so he gave it to Francisco. Sunday evening we had Luis Carlos and Irene over for dinner. It was a good time for Luis and Elizabeth to get to know them because they are potential leaders. Luis uses every opportunity to teach from the Bible. It is great to see how he turns any conversation into a teaching moment.

Monday was Mothers' Day here, a national holiday. We went to a flower shop in the morning and bought 3 dozen long-stemmed roses. In the afternoon, we drove to our little town and handed out roses to all the mothers we know, whether they are believers or not. It was easy to do because they tend to gather as families where grandmas live; therefore, we could go to one house and had out 10 roses at the time. The ladies were very happy to get long-stemmed roses. Some never had one because they are expensive. We also included a verse from Proverbs with the roses. We finished the afternoon back at Francisco and Luz's house. They surprised us with dinner: fried red snappers form the previous day´s catch. We stayed a long time talking and sharing. It was a beautiful mothers' day. I am lucky to have two mothers' day celebrations a year.

Last night, Tuesday, we had Walter and Yesenia over for dinner. I made Mexican enchiladas, which are completely unknown here and in Bolivia. They all loved them. Walter and Yesenia were separated for four months; one of the reasons we were so disappointed after our last trip. She sent their two daughters to Nicaragua to live with her mother while they were separated and now has to travel there this week to get them. We were so sad about the whole situation and are very happy to see them back together. They are very open to talk about their problems. We talked to them about how to communicate as a couple. During the course of the evening, Elizabeth asked them if they wanted to ask Jesus into their lives and they looked at each other and agreed to pray the prayer. What a joyous evening! We send them home with a Bible and home made chocolate chip cookies!

Today, Wednesday, we started with a long walk on the beach. Right now Luis is getting a free golf lesson. The plan was to have lunch with the pastor, but he is sick and canceled. I think we will just take it easy the rest of the day. We have had non-stop activities. It will be nice just to stay home and relax for a day.

Prayer requests:

  • Pray for protection for all four of us from mosquito-transmitted diseases.
  • Pray for Arleth and Irene, already sick with either dengue or zika.
  • Pray for Yesenia as she travels to Nicaragua to get her daughters and bring them back. Pray for her relationship to Walter and for their new life in Christ.
  • Pray for all those mothers who received a rose and a Bible verse, that they will know the Lord.
  • Pray for all the visits, the Bible studies, the little group of believers in this village, that the Lord will bring up a great harvest.
  • Pray for protection for our family back home.

Second Week

On Thursday of last week we started a Bible study at the home of Eduardo and Arelis. We feel that we need to disciple this couple because they say they are believers, but don't have much Bible knowledge. We are using a very simple study about who Jesus is: He is God, the Lamb of God, the Good Shepherd, our Defender, our King. Arriving at their home, we were pleasantly surprised to find Eduardo's mother and Paola there also. They held the common belief that all religions bring you to God. We were very clear to show them John 14:6. He is THE way, not a way, but the only way to God.

Since our friends were delayed in Bolivia, John had to preach at church on Sunday because the pastor had gone to visit his mother across the border. He talked about the parable of the workers in the vineyard on Matthew 20. The congregation went to church expecting a Bolivian preacher, but got the Gringo instead!

Sunday night we had a good group at the couples' meeting. Again, we had planned to have Luis share his testimony, but we went with Plan B, which was to show two scenes from the movie Miracles from Heaven that we showed the first Sunday and talk about when faith falters and the simplicity of the testimony of a young child. We had a time of serious discussion, followed by a game. They really get into the games. The idea is to show them that we can have a good time without alcohol.

We praise the Lord that our friends arrived without any further incidents on Tuesday. It takes them three days to get here from South America: one day traveling 7 hours by bus from their home to the international airport, one day flying from their country to our capital here, and one day again 5 hours by bus from the capital to a big town 30 minutes from our house. The day they were coming here there was a big taxi strike in the capital. They were protesting Uber. When I heard about the strike, I thought, "oh. Lord, what now?" There were big traffic jams, so I was afraid that they would have problems getting to the bus station, but our friends where they spent the night called Uber! A little ironic! They got to the bus station in 20 minutes, a record time for the capital. They still were 45 minutes late  arriving here because the bus got caught in a traffic jam. We picked them up and took them to a local restaurant for a very late lunch and drove home.

Luis and Elizabeth, workers from Bolivia

Wednesday morning we took them to our little town for a prayer walk. We met a few people, so we had a chance to pray with them. We also drove to the other little town where the church is located and prayed around the property. During the afternoon we went swimming at the beach. Bolivia is land locked in South America. They only time they had seen the ocean was during a visit to Brazil. They were delighted to be able to spend time at the beach. After dinner we went back to town to visit a few homes. We visited Walter and Yesenia (see last week's blog), Ricardo and Miguelina, and Christian and Daniela. It is very hot here, so when we visit any home, we just sit on their front porch, which exposes us to mosquitoes. We are very concerned about dengue, zika and chikungunya, which comes from Africa and is very dangerous also. I am already having skin problems from the amount of Deet that we spray on ourselves every day.

Today we spent our morning at the mechanic shop getting halogen lights for our car; then we went back to the restaurant in town by the beach and had a late brunch. Tonight we will try out the lights as we drive into town, back to Eduardo's house for the second Bible study about Jesus, the Lamb of God. Another praise, they actually improved the dirt road to town by smoothing out the surface a little bit!

I was bored at the mechanic shop and shot these pictures of the cemetery across the street

I guess pictures of a cemetery is not the best way to finish the blog, so here is a picture of the bay in front of the restaurant:

It is cloudy today with some rain

Prayer requests:

  • Pray for good health and protection from mosquito-transmitted diseases. Irene has dengue. They all had it at her house, and that's where we have the couples' meetings.
  • Pray for all the visits and the Bible studies. May the seed planted bear fruit.
  • Pray for our friends from Bolivia, Luis and Elizabeth, that they will find rest and refreshment here, and at the same time, that the Lord will give them insight into our ministry.
  • Pray for a lot wisdom and insight for us also.
  • Pray for safety and protection for our family back home.
Thank you very much for keeping us in your prayers!
Until next time...from the beach...

First Week

It has been a week already! We have been fairly busy visiting our friends, and we had our first meeting with the couples on Saturday. Twenty people showed up. Some couples who had moved away are back in town and attended. We showed the movie Miracles from Heaven because Randall had requested it. I would not have brought the movie otherwise because it is so close to their own experience with Yiradi, but they saw it in the movie theater at the big city by the airport and wanted the group to see it. It is a very good movie. After the movie we had a little talk about miracles and trials. We read from Ro. 5:3-5 The movie comes with questions for discussion. I think we will have further discussion questions on our next meeting, which will be on Sunday because on Saturday there is a big meeting in town at the water district.

The reason for the water district meeting is that there is a developer, who happens to be the president of the water board, who wants to build 95 homes and tap into the town's water supply. Each town taps into an aquifer and controls their own water supply, but these are small wells for small towns. There is just not enough water to support such a development, but I don't know what legal resources the town has to fight it.

Our friends coming from Bolivia hit a road block. They were supposed to arrive at the capital on Monday, but when they got to the airport in Bolivia, they were not allowed to leave because, according to the officials, their shot cards were not in order. These people travel internationally all the time and never had any problems. They will try again next Monday, August 8th. He said that he was very frustrated, but finally they prayed and asked the Lord for peace. The Lord has a reason for this delay even if we don't see it.

This is our favorite restaurant. The food is very good and it is very pretty.

We have visited a few friends and went out to eat with Randall, Arleth and Yirardi Sunday night. By the way, they are applying for a tourist visa to visit the USA in October. Their interview is Friday at the capital, We are praying for the Lord's will. Last night we went out to eat with another couple, Walter and Yesenia. He is a local boy, but she is from Nicaragua.

Then, this morning we had breakfast with Alejandra, who was part of the original couples' group, but has since broken up with that man and has another boyfriend. She told us that she still reads the Bible. We encouraged her to attend church with her new boyfriend. She doesn't live in our little town any more, but there is a church frequented by her boyfriend's family near her house.

All this fellowship around the table makes it hard for us to keep our weight down, and it is only the first week!

Prayer requests:
  • Please pray for our friends coming from Bolivia, that they have a smooth and safe trip this time.
  • Pray for safety and good health for us. The roads are just awful!
  • Pray for wisdom and insight as we talk to all our friends here.
  • Pray for safety and protection for our family back home.
Until next time...from the beach...
