Our First Sunset

Last night we walked to "Playa Bonita" to watch the sunset. It is one of our favorite things to do here.

This morning we walked to Playa Avellanas to have our fruit shake on the beach. We met two brothers and their mother. The boys recognized us immediately and gave each one of us a kiss. I don't know why the boys were not in school. There were a few locals on the beach. A man was riding a horse with a boogie board on his back. The waves were calmed today as the tide was starting to recede. We chatted with the restaurant manager. He told us that they close during Easter vacation because there are too many tourist! As we walked back we pondered on the different world view. Tonight we are going to visit one of the families we are friends with here. John just left to meet the tennis pro who is a Christian. Little by little we will fall into our routine here.

We Are Here

We got here safe and sound, but not without some minor bumps on the road. When we checked in San Diego, they told us that the plane would be delayed two and a half hours. We had a three hour lay over in Texas, and they assured us that we would make it. They even ordered an electric car to be waiting for us there. When we arrived in Houston, the electric car wasn't there yet; so they told us that we would get to the gate faster if we walked. John ran ahead, and I walked as fast as I could dragging a very heavy carry-on full of books. I thought I was going to have a heart attack. It wasn't the running, but the heavy load. John got to our gate, and they were holding up the plane for us, not only that, but I got to see our luggage being loaded from my window seat.

We arrived at Liberia, Costa Rica at 7:15 pm local time. They have swine flu here also. All the airport workers were wearing masks. It was a little strange. So, we got our six suitcases (That's it! We are not bringing all those Bibles and books next time!)and went outside to catch our ride, but nobody was waiting for us. We tried to call the transportation office, but could not use our cell phones, for some reason. The porter then lent us his cellular phone, and we called the main gate at our condos, but they couldn't give us any information; so, we hired a tiny little taxi (Remember, six suitcases). In typical local fashion, all other drivers helped ours to load the smaller suitcases in the trunk, one in front on the passenger seat, one between us in the back and one tied to the top of the car. I should have taken a picture, but it was very dark in the parking lot. Anyway, as we talked to our driver while on the way, we found out that he had been at the airport since noon, and we were his only fare, and our plane was the last one for the day. I think the Lord worked all this out so that our driver made some money. The economy is tough here because tourism is down.

By the way, this morning the man who was supposed to pick us up came by to apologize. He was late, but the people at the main gate did not know this. We are just glad that we are finally here. We went grocery shopping today (Rubia, we did not get ice cream this time), and tomorrow we will start re-connecting with our friends.

Getting Ready

We are in the middle of whirlwind preparations for our trip. We have to pack for two different climates. It will be rainy, hot and humid in Costa Rica, but it will be cold, fall weather in Chile. Furthermore, the churches are very conservative in Chile. John will have to pack a suit and a tie. I will have to pack a suit also, and coats, etc. Pray for us...
